My History Fix

the Fun Side of History!

ROADSIDE EYE CANDY

April 18, 2014

I’m a visual person, and as much as I love to read sometimes I just really enjoy pictures!  They inspire me, get my artistic juices flowing, and they are transporting.  So sometimes I am going to share what I like to call “Eye Candy” posts—groupings on a topic just because they are cool or lovely or moving, or…you get the picture!  Enjoy today’s selection of Roadside Eye Candy…

A fabulous example of the mid-twentieth century psyche…

Just a few years ago this gem was recovered and refurbished, and now proudly adorns the exterior of Cole’s, Los Angeles’ “oldest public house.”

This sign was original to the Earl Carroll Theatre in LA, but now can be seen on the Universal CityWalk at Universal City.  Stunning.

Check out this amazing building ad for Faygo Orange pop–that’s right, I said pop not soda!  It was preserved when a building was constructed right up against the wall of an existing store.  By June of 2012, the second building was torn down, revealing the old ad…just in time for Kim Kozlowski to come along and capture this gorgeous image! (Check out her site, she does beautiful work!)  And yes, this is in Detroit…The D!

Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs?  How about Mutts Amazing Sign!?!  Starbursts and a planet…or sun…or satellite?  It simply amounts to a Space Age delight.  Grab a dog at Mutts in Oklahoma City.

I would love to see this one in action…but I would have to go to Melbourne, Australia!

I love the colors and the vintage credit card ads on the side of this one.

Who remembers watching snowy, scrolling TV?  Hopefully this ad in Birmingham, Alabama survived.  Back in April 2012 it was on the brink…follow the link to read about it!

This sign truly makes me want to stop in for a  sandwich and a cup of coffee.

I really can’t add anything to this one. Other than maybe…Happy Easter!

So what do you think?  Do these photos take you back to a time or place?  I would love to know your thoughts, so comment away!

I purchased Faygo “Twist” last week.

The Faygo Root Beer tv jingle ‘popped’ right into my head. I imagine the royalties may have been monumental.

1968? I graduated from Michigan State University and began my teaching career.
